Riverview Station

Building History

When Riverview Station was built on the shores of the French Broad River in 1902, it was at the heart of a booming industrial district serving a rapidly-growing Asheville. For nearly 50 years, the building housed one of the largest leather-making businesses in the country, the Hans Rees tannery. Later, a series of textile companies—Ness Brothers, Burlington Industries and American Threshold—used the space to spin yarn and weave blankets, and, more recently, to produce nonwoven materials like disposable surgical gowns. In the 1990s, The Candle Station moved its headquarters to the building, where it produced hand-poured candles and gifts inspired by the area’s craft traditions.

Today, Riverview Station has evolved along with Asheville’s burgeoning creative population. The century-old brick walls are now squarely in the center of Asheville’s River Arts District, and the building is home to an exciting, eclectic community of talented artists and inventive entrepreneurs.

River District Artists

The Asheville River Arts District occupies X acres on the west/east/south bank of the French Broad River just southwest of downtown. In the late 19th and early 20th century, much of the area was developed for industrial uses: lumber yards, power companies, textile mills, distilleries and more made the area the biggest industrial zone in the western part of North Carolina. Many of the businesses suffered during the Great Depression in the 1930s, and the area stagnated. But in the late 1980s and 1990s, artists and other creative types began moving their workshops into the empty warehouses. At the same time, efforts were made to clean up the riverfront and provide park and other recreation space near the French Broad. The city of Asheville designated the area the Asheville River Arts District in WHEN?

Today, this exciting, growing zone serves as Asheville’s creative heart, and the future looks bright.
